Department of Spanish and Portuguese

Ph.D. candidate in Portuguese (ABD) at Indiana University, with a minor in Hispanic Literatures and a certificate in Literary Translation from the Department of Comparative Literature, and M.A. in Brazilian Literature (Federal University of Minas Gerais), with highest distinction. My interdisciplinary research explores how Latin American literatures and arts—particularly those created by women, Black, Indigenous, and queer artists—reimagine nation, identity, and belonging beyond the constraints of linguistic and territorial borders. Working at the intersection of Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies, translation, and visual culture, I examine how aesthetic expression travels across languages and media to build alternative narratives of community. Highlighted by Forbes Under 30 Brazil in 2024, I published one novel (Companhia das Letras, 2023), one short story collection (Letramento, 2019) and three books of poetry (Letramento, 2019, 2017, 2015). As a literature scholar, I organized two essay collections, one on Brazilian women writers (Letramento, 2019) and one on Hilda Hilst (Quintal, 2018). For my research, I received fellowships from the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), Indiana University, the Kinsey Institute, the City of Bloomington Arts Commission, and the Brazilian Academy of Letters. I received two national literary awards, one from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture (2018) and the other from the Brazilian Special Secretary of Culture (2019). I have presented my work at many events in Brazil, United States, Portugal, Colombia, and Mexico. I have been teaching literature, creative writing, Spanish, and Portuguese for over a decade, with experience at the University level at both Indiana University and the Federal University of Minas Gerais. For my work in the classroom, Collins Living-Learning Center students honored me with their teaching award. In my free time, I enjoy baking bread, hiking in nature and making collages.
